What gbl is made of? Where to buy GBL?
GBL (also known as gamma bytirolactone) has been found as extracts from samples of unadulterated wines. This indicates that gamma bytirolactone is a natural component and can be found in other products without sintezing (you can buy GBL in our online shop).
The concentration was detected in a 5 microgram/mL and was easily observed using a simple extraction technique followed by GC / MS analysis. Also GBL can be found in cheese flavorings but in the final foodstuff.
Nowadays GBL is made of 1,4-butanediol with reaction of dehydrogenation. This method allows to get GBL purity up to 99.99% and use product in chemistry and as a strong solvent or stains remover.
As a lactone, GBL is hydrolyzed under basic conditions, for example in a sodium hydroxide solution in sodium-gamma-hydroxybutyrate, the sodium salt of gamma-hydroxybutyric acid. In acidic water, a mixture of the lactone and acid forms coexist in an equilibrium. These compounds then may go on to form the polymer poly (4-hydroxybutyrate). When treated with a non-nucleophilic base, such as lithium diisopropylamide, GBL undergoes deprotonation alpha to the carbonyl. The related compound caprolactone can be used to make a polyester in this manner.
However, GBL cleaner (solvent) cant be used for ingestion and due to its chemical activity, working with it is allowed only in goggles and gloves.
